The Friendly Frugalista Has MOVED to the New URL

Just an update to let everyone know that the new blog is finally running at full speed.  All new posts will be made at the new address,

If you’re a subscriber, your information has been uploaded to the new blog and you should begin receiving updates by email in the near future.  I’m still trying to find the “right” plugin for post notifications, so please be patient.  Thanks!  I’m hoping to find one that will send a digest once or twice a day, but the one I have installed at the moment isn’t working properly.

If you’re not a subscriber here, please consider subscribing at the new blog.  Once I overcome the post notification “flaw”, you will receive email updates for new posts.

Some of you may have noticed some issues with the blog yesterday.  I contacted Support at for assistance and the issues have been resolved.  So, a big THANK YOU to Anthony for helping me out!

Even after technical support resolved the original issue, I still could not add new posts.  Anthony offered some suggestions, so I switched from Google Chrome to Safari and was able to log in and post with no problem!  (I’ll clear my Google Chrome history later.) If you continue to have issues with the blog, you might try the suggestions Anthony gave me:

Empty your current browser’s cache and enter the url again:

Enter the url in a different browser

Also, the blog is now available at  For now, I will be posting in both places.  When the new domain is completely ready, I will permanently switch.  If you want to get used to that, go ahead and start using the new url. Thanks!

A Special Announcement from Cara, author of the Friendly Frugalista

The Friendly Frugalista has been up and running for a few months and things are going well.  I am pleased to announce the official launch of two additional sites that I’ve been working on!  Our family has been committed to homeschooling since our first child was born over 15 years ago.  Over the years, we’ve tried many resources, enjoyed successes, endured failures, schooled while moving or traveling, shared our journey with others, and learned from the adventures of other homeschoolers.  For a long time, I’ve wanted to establish a web site for homeschoolers to share with–and learn from–them.  But, I’ve discovered through my experiences as a blogger that it is much easier to add new information to a blog than it is to do so to a static website.  After nearly 3 months of trying out a variety of host domains, I finally came up with a balance that works for me (for now). I will continue to learn and grow as I go along and, perhaps, come up with a better plan.  But, for now, I have established a web site (hosted by Homestead) with information for homeschoolers *and* a blog (hosted by HostSo) to accompany the site.  I’m still tweaking things a bit to see how best to keep all 3 sites up-to-date without too much overlap, but the sites are finally up and running.  In a way, the new blog is like a homeschool version of The Friendly Frugalista.  If you are interested in homeschooling topics, please take a peek at these new sites.

Blessings, Cara

P.S.  In the future, I hope to upgrade this blog to a hosted site too.  But, I spent a lot of trial-and-error time on the other blog, so I’ve kept this one as is while learning the ropes.  It is a lot easier to destroy a non-published blog than a published one.  LOL!

Evergreen Home Education (the main homeschooling web site, hosted by Homestead)

The EHE Blog (the accompanying blog for Evergreen Home Education, hosted by HostSo)

I have an idea! It’s called a BLITZ! Yes, a BLITZ!

Just what is a BLITZ!?  It is a post with more than one post in it.  Huh?  Well, you see, when I sit down to add to the blog, I often have many different things to blog about.  But, that means you end up with, say, 8 new posts a day coming into your inbox.  (That is, if you subscribed and chose immediate delivery of all new posts.  If you didn’t, then you might not care as much about the BLITZ!  But, read on anyway, ‘cuz maybe you’ll still care a little.)  Now, I rather like receiving bits of information in well-organized little chunks.  But, if every email I received was broken into 2 (or 5, or 10) different chunks, then that would be a lot of emails.  (And I probably wouldn’t like it after all!)  So, the BLITZ! is a way of putting several related bits of information into one post.  It would be cool to have a BLITZ! widget, or something like that, but I don’t.  So, I’ll just do it the “old-fashioned” way, which is to put it all together myself.  LOL!

So, here’s how it will work.  Let’s say I want to blog about 3 different grocery store ads/sales/coupons/etc.  I put them ALL in the same post and call it a Grocery BLITZ!  Now consider that I have a lot of unrelated things to blog about, but in order to save time (and emails cluttering your inbox), I put them all together and call the post a Patchwork BLITZ!  Does that make sense?

So, if you see the word BLITZ! in the post title, you’ll know there’s more than one topic inside.  And, if see you the word Craft in front of the word BLITZ!, you’ll know there’s more than one craft topic inside.  Cool, huh?

I’m about to give it a try with a new post.  Stay tuned for that and please let me know what you think!  Comments are moderated, but I will approve them with a few restrictions:  no SPAM, no cursing, no divisive or derogatory comments, etc.  Constructive criticism is OK, but only if you really, really feel you must.  Hehe!

[A brief disclaimer:  One of the informal definitions of the term, “blitz,” is a concentrated effort to get something done.  That’s how it is used for this blog.]

Hello Out There!

Just a quick update to let you know I’m still here on the other side of the screen.  🙂  I’ve been taking care of some administrative stuff for the blog, including trying on some new themes.  If you see the blog changing a lot over the next few days (weeks?), don’t worry. Your computer isn’t messed up.  And neither are your eyes!  It’s just me trying to find the right balance between visual clutter and visual appeal.  🙂

Oh, and I created an Avatar!   Thing is, I can’t remember which web avatar creation thingy I used to make it.  LOL!  I’ll figure that out so that I can add the proper mention for the web avatar creation thingy creator.  But, for now, I’ll have to blame the “automatic upgrade” that caused my computer to restart and lose everything that I had saved in my Google Chrome tabs.  Grrrr!

Good night, all!  I hope to be back tomorrow with more deals!

My family will be heading out soon to attend a New Year’s Eve game night at the church we attend.  Since it’s 45 minutes away, it’ll be well after midnight when we return home.  S0, I’m getting a head start and posting now.

I have fresh bread baking in the oven and it smells so good!  I’ll be taking it out just before we head out the door.  Not only will it taste good when we eat it, but it will keep my lap warm all the way to the church building.  :o)  But I digress!

I’m an incurable Night Owl, so I’ll probably be back and ready to post early in the New Year (that is, around 1:30 am on the 1st). But, if I’m not up to it, I’ll catch you all a little later in the day.  I still have plenty of deals to post about, despite my posting frenzy of last eve!  And I am committed to finding even more ways to save in the new year!  I will pass them on to you, of course!

I pray that you and yours will be safe tonight.  If you don’t mind, please say a prayer for us too.  May you all be blessed in the year 2010!

In Christian Love,

Merry Christmas!

I wasn’t expecting to have time for the blog today, but the weather thwarted our plans to get-together with the extended family for Christmas dinner. We’ll try again Sunday! Meanwhile, this branch of the family tree had a nice time at home: opening presents, eating breakfast foods for lunch (and later eating home-made bread), playing with toys, and watching a movie.

We did have a wonderful family visit last night on Christmas Eve with most of the family present. And we all made it safely to our own homes before the sleet, rain, and ice settled in. Since we already had snow on the ground, it made for a too-dangerous trip in several counties, including the ones that our relatives live in. We all decided not to risk it!

My last post was on the 20th. I apologize for taking so long to post again without at least giving you an “I’m on a break” message. Truth is, I hadn’t planned to take much of a break, but life had other plans for me. The kids and I spent the 14th through the 23rd visiting with my parents in TN. We were supposed to return home on the 21st, but a blanket of snow covered the entire state of VA and parts of eastern TN, so I stayed put until the roads were clear and dear hubby had a chance to shovel out the driveway for us. No reason to drive 500+ miles and then not be able to get into the driveway! LOL! It may not seem like a big deal, but we live at the end of a private, gravel drive. It is 3/10 of a mile to get to the mailbox. So, when it snows, we normally expect to be snowed in for a while. This is our 6th winter living here and, so far, we’ve only had major snowstorms the 1st year and this year. All in all, not too bad! 🙂 Maybe we should get a snowblower, but we wonder if we *really* need it if it is going to sit idle for 5 years!

So, on Tuesday, while I was still visiting my parents, I decided to load Norton 2010 onto my laptop. I’ve not always heard great things about Norton, but I read a lot of positive reviews about 2010 and I got a great deal on it from, so I took a chance. I regret that now. As soon as it loaded, my laptop stopped connecting to the Internet. I spent most of Tuesday trying to fix the problem, including a “live chat” with support from Dad’s desktop and a manual reset of my IP addresses. NOTHING worked and I finally gave up before ripping all my hair out. We traveled home on Wednesday and, thankfully, the laptop connected here (once I had made some quick adjustments to the settings). After traveling all day, I didn’t spend much time on the ‘Net. I could do that on Thursday, right? Wrong! After our lovely Christmas Eve with family, we came home to a complete loss of Internet service. Since it affected all of our computers, I knew it wasn’t just *my* laptop. Phew! I am so happy to say that everything is back in order today and I have finally caught up with all of my emails.

So, there you have it! I can’t control the weather and I can’t control technology! Maybe things will go smoothly for a while?!?

Blessings to you all,
Cara (aka, The Friendly Frugalista)

Some “Technical Difficulties” Are Self-Inflicted

So, thanks to the Cookie Exchange, I finally had some traffic on my site.  🙂 🙂 :)What a great time to “show off” with a bunch of new posts, right? Well, not so much!  Why,  you ask?   Hmmm, let’s see.  As I was packing for my trip to TN (with my three kiddos in tow), I forgot something.  Rolling laptop case–check!  Lap desk–check!  Laptop–check!  Mouse–check!  3 gig Travel Drive–check!  Power cord and adapter–UH OH!  I forgot to pack the power source!  Aarrgh!  Grrrr!  Sigh!  😦 My Dad went online to find out how much it would cost to buy a replacement and, ahem, let’s just say this Frugalista is way too frugal to buy a new one.  Waaaay toooo fruuuugal!  So, on to Plan B.  *ring*ring*ring*  “Hi, honey, are you going to the post office today?”  Yeah!  He’s sending it to me in a Priority Mail Flat Rate box and I hope–really, really hope–it arrives in two days!  At this time, that would be *TOMORROW*.  Meanwhile, I’ve been using the old desktop at my parents’ house to keep up with my email.  To say I get a lot of email would be an understatement!  I mean, I get *a lot* of email.  And much of it has to do with keeping this blog going with all the great things I want to post here.  But, I digress a little.  Dad has WiFi, High-Speed Internet, and even a new laptop (and it’s even a Mac, the lucky duck!)  But, this desktop is soooo sloooow.  Hence, the cold dry spell of no posting!  It has only been a few days, actually, but in the cyberworld it seems like forever!  Still, there is always tomorrow!  🙂

Friendly Frugalista Blog Update: Link Issues

I posted several new links this evening, then realized they weren’t working when I attempted to open them. This made me wonder if any of my older links were defective and I did find that some of those were not working either.  I investigated the issue and fixed all of the defective links.  There were a few that did not work even after I tried to fix them, so I removed those posts.  I apologize for the inconvenience.  Now that I know what I did wrong, I should be able to avoid this issue in the future!

About the Friendly Frugalista

Hello! My name is Cara and I’m the author of The Friendly Frugalista, a new blog dedicated to sharing the frugal lifestyle. While I’m no expert at frugal living, I have been a fan of frugality for my entire life. As the first of two children born to an enlisted father and a stay-at-home mother, I grew up knowing and loving phrases such as “Let’s go to the Flea Market!” or “So-and-so gave us a bag of hand-me-downs.” What bliss! Hand-me-downs have always been one of my favorites gifts to receive. Since I am now a stay-at-home Mom with 3 children of my own, I know how valuable it is to find ways to save money by using coupons, finding freebies, requesting samples, re-using items, etc. In addition to the traditional wonders like flea markets, garage sales, clearance sales, and newspaper ads, we now have the entire World Wide Web at our disposal. Most everyone (save the most Internet-shy) knows about eBay, Craigslist, and Freecycle. But, more recently, I’ve found that subscribing to e-newsletters is a virtually endless treasure chest of gems for the bargain-hunter. I now receive email updates from a myriad of companies willing to offer me freebies, coupons, subscriber-only sales, and more just because I took the time to sign up for a newsletter! How much easier could bargain-hunting get? Well, it CAN be even easier than that! There are lots of folks out there like me who are serving as a bulletin board of offers. They provide places where the frugalist expert–or beginner–can go to find what they seek–A NEW WAY TO SAVE MONEY. I’ll never claim to be the best, or brightest, or the one with the most free time to devote to the cause, but I’ll strive to do my best with the time and resources that I have. I may never know who YOU are, if you like my blog, or if you recommend me to your friends (or not), but I thank you for dropping in to give me a chance. Have a great weekend!
