This Week @ Family Intel: Summary of “Home Sweet Homework”

Hmmmm!  It almost seems like Family Intel has a videocamera watching our house.  Last week’s summary was particularly applicable to our family.  And it seems this week’s summary just may be too.  Even though we’re homeschoolers and homework is not a huge problem around here (everything we do is home-work–hehe!), I’m pretty sure the studying strategies part will be helpful.

Remember that you must register at Family Intel to see the summaries.  As always, registration is FREE!  🙂

SUMMARY RUN-DOWN:

~This Week~  Home Sweet Homework:  A Parent’s Guide to Stress-Free Homework & Studying Strategies That Work by Sharon Marshall Lockett

~Last Week~  Siblings Without Rivalry by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish

~Next Week~ Helping  Hyperactive Kids by Lynn Horowitz and Cecile Rost

Family Intel now has 43 FREE summaries!  Yay!

This Week @ Homeschool FREEBIE of the Day: The Giant Handbook of Nature Study

I love what Homeschool FREEBIE of the Day is offering this week!   This week’s FREEBIE download is so big, they’ve divided it up over the whole week.  I’ll try to remember to remind you every day so that you (and I) will not miss any part of it!

Here are the details from their Heads Up email:

Well, this week we’re doing something a bit different at HomeschoolFreebieOfTheDay — bringing you ONE great resource that is so big, we had to divide it into SIX separate ebooks:

THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY

This is a HUGE (940 pages) and absolutely wonderful teaching guide full of hundreds of nature study lessons,
activities and discussion questions. It is a complete multi-year nature study curriculum that you can use
for years to come. It is so big (over 100 megs in size) we had to divide it into six manageable ebooks for you.

Here’s the rundown:

———–

Monday, January 18th:
THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART I – TEACHER’S GUIDE & OVERVIEW plus THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART II –  BIRDS & FISH

In PART ONE, you get a very helpful and practical teacher’s guide, including an overview of the purpose, scope and style of the handbook… how each lesson is set up… what nature study should do for your children… how to to tie math, art, geography, gardening, agriculture & science into your nature study, and more. Each lesson begins with a “teacher’s story” which can be read to students along with suggested activities & methods, followed by great discussion questions.

In PART TWO, we jump into the actual lessons, this time devoted to birds & fish. As you’ll quickly see, these lessons are wonderfully written, blending history, humor, a bit of poetry, and a delightful sense of wonder into these nature studies.

Over the rest of the week, then, we’ll bring you the rest of the book:

————

Tuesday, January 19th:
THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART III – AMPHIBIANS, REPTILES & MAMMALS

————

Wednesday, January 20th:
THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART IV – INSECTS & INVERTEBRATES

————

Thursday, January 21st:
THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART V – PLANTS AND TREES

————

Friday, January 22nd:
THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART VI – EARTH, WATER & SKY

————

Check these out all this week and see why we decided to devote the full week to bringing you this excellent study resource curriculum!  It is just great.

This Week @ Homeschool Freebie of the Day

Homeschool Freebie of the Day, one of my favorite sources for free downloads, is back after taking a holiday break.  Their Heads Up email has hit my inbox, so here’s a cut & paste of what’s in store this week:

Monday, January 4th:
Supermom’s Simple Guide to Healthier Eating for Beginners and Beyond (PDF ebook)

“I know I should be eating healthier, but I don’t know where to begin!”
“A healthier diet would be nice, but my husband and kids will never go for it.”
“Healthy food doesn’t taste good.” Have you ever had any of these thoughts?
Many people do! Incorporating healthful habits is important for all of us,
but it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to do, how to do it,
all the while wondering whether or not we’re going to like the taste.

In her long-anticipated first book, “Supermom” Erica Johns shares her
philosophy of taking realistic baby steps toward your healthy eating goals,
rather than burning yourself out on extreme health plans. A homeschooling
mother of six, she understands the unique challenges of time management
and healthy living on a modest budget.  A must for homeschool moms that
want to start out the new year with a practical plan for health and
weight loss that works!

Find out in this great half hour “Living Book for the Ears” audio program.

(PLUS… we’ll also have TWO MORE great “wintertime” audio stories

Wednesday, January 6th:

A full length HomeMaker’s Mentor lesson offering inspiration
that will warm you and yours! This lesson includes a photo tutorial on how to make
pinecone firestarters, ornamental gift match boxes, a checklist for your fireplace,
reminiscing about hearths in the homes of yesteryear through all four seasons,
and warming recipes for cups o’ fireside cheer! A great resource for those
chilly winter evenings!

Thursday, January 7th:

Courtesy of Copycat Books, today we have a neat little collection of
cursive writing printables. Included are: Pangrams (sentences containing all 26 letters
of the alphabet); the Pledge of Allegiance; the Preamble to the Constitution;
the books of the Bible; and a selection from Proverbs 31 on the Virtuous Woman.
Three versions of each printable is provided: traditional script, modern & italic.
A great tool to provide your students penmanship practice!

Blog Recommendation: Minnesota Mama’s Must Haves

Sarah, a stay-at-home mother of two young children including a newborn boy born last month, authors the blog Minnesota Mama’s Must Haves.  I wish I had known about her when my kids were little.  On the other hand, she probably wasn’t blogging then.  LOL!   At any rate, she does product reviews and that enables her to offer giveaways on her blog.  There are numerous ways to enter her giveaways.  For each giveaway, you must complete a mandatory entry.  This usually consists of visiting the company site and choosing your favorite product then telling her what that product is in a comment (for your first entry in the giveaway).  After the mandatory entry is completed, you can “earn” extra entries by entering her other giveaways and telling her which ones you entered in another comment; becoming a fan of her blog on facebook; blogging about the giveaway; putting her button on your blog; etc. For each thing you do, you just add a comment to the giveaway to tell her.  Each unique comment earns an entry in the giveaway. Winners are selected randomly using random.org.  Winners are posted on the blog and emailed privately.  Each winner has 48 hours to respond or another winner is chosen.

Currently, Sarah has several really cute items up for giveaway:  a soft rag doll of winner’s choosing from Adorable Kinders doll; a Baby Nest carrier from My Baby Nest; and an adorable eco-friendly tea set from Green Toys.

So, if you’re a bit confused, here’s how I worked it:  For each of the above giveaways, I visited the company’s site and commented about my favorite item at the giveaway; commented that I was a facebook fan of MMMH; commented that I am an email subscriber; and commented that I had entered the other two giveaways.  That earned me 5 entries in each giveaway.  After posting this, I will be able to go back and enter another comment for each giveaway, bringing my total to 6 entries each.  It’s easy, so give it a whirl!  :o)

Since my youngest is 6 and a boy, I don’t really need a doll, a baby carrier, or a tea set.  BUT, I have several little nieces and nephews.  Plus, I know several women who are expecting.  If I win, I know I will be able to bless someone else and that was worth the effort to repeatedly enter those giveaways.

It is also worth noting that Sarah’s reviews don’t always end in a giveaway, but I’ve found them to be a great way to learn about products that I’ve never heard of before.  For instance, she reviewed the FUMI purse hook, which is perfect for the germaphobe!

Rainbow Resource Center–FREE Shipping on Orders of $25 or More

Rainbow Resource has one of our favorite catalogs for three reasons. One, the catalog is HUGE!  Two, the prices are good!  Three, it contains much more than homeschool curricula.  It also contains plenty of listings for the non-homeschooler, such as children’s books and arts & crafts. The only real downside I’ve found is that I normally have to place an order of $150 or more in order to get free shipping.  For that reason, I only order from them about once a year because I absolutely hate to pay for shipping when I can often get it for free if I wait long enough or buy somewhere else w/o shipping costs.  So, I’m very excited to say that I just found out about their holiday offer:  Until December 22nd, Rainbow Resource is offering FREE shipping on orders of $25 or more!

Here’s a cut & paste from their web site:

From now until December 22nd, orders of $25.00 or more will receive FREE standard shipping to the 48 contiguous states. There’s no promotional code, no coupon, no secret word – just free shipping on all qualifying orders! Save yourself the hassle of shopping mall traffic and enjoy the convenience and value of shopping with us. Some restrictions apply; see below for details.

Orders received by 4 p.m. Central Time December 22nd qualify for our free shipping promotion and orders will leave our warehouse by 12/23. Applies only to orders with standard shipping option (lowest cost option; our choice of carrier) shipped to addresses in the 48 contiguous states. In orders where the lowest cost option is USPS Media Mail, you will be able to upgrade to UPS Ground or Priority Mail for just $1.00. Please note that we cannot guarantee Christmas delivery on orders with the lowest cost option, particularly orders shipped Media Mail through the USPS. Orders that include Bargain Book items and regular items are eligible for free shipping, but orders made up solely of Bargain Book items do not.

Thank you for shopping with us!”
